Little Bluff

- on CR 13 way past South Bay - a bit of a drive from Picton
- interesting out-of-the-way waterfront area

Beaver Meadow

- take Lake St/#10 from Picton, turn right on #11, and it's on your right, right there
- just somewhere to explore nature

Regent Theatre

- has movies & sometimes plays or concerts
- building has some sort of historical significance
- I believe the taxpayer money is what keeps it going over the long run

Corn Maze

- on the way to Wellington from Picton
- I don't know if it even exists any more, but it wasn't exciting

Other Restaurants I've Tried in PEC

My ratings are based on my experience there. To me food taste is the most important, but only in comparison to the cost. The ambiance and the service have to not distract me from the taste - that's about all I ask for that part of the experience.

And a useful hours of operation chart (with phone numbers) since some businesses are more tourist-oriented, and thus have inconsistent hours through the year.

Island Family Restaurant (pretty good), on Main St. across from the Metro grocery store
- dinner in 2011, lunch/dinner in 2009
  • Offers a nice selection of Greek dishes.
  • On this website it says there are no corking fees if you bring your own wine (will have to remember that when I'm drinking again - but only if we're walking home, I suppose).
  • The main reason I like this place is because I have low expectations from local restaurants, especially when it comes to ethnic cuisine. This restaurant has been a pleasant surprise both times I've tried it.
  • Their moussaka and their greek platter are both good.
  • At the start of our dinner we were served a greek-ish salad and warmed buns with flavoured oil for dipping - pleasant surprise since we didn't know salad came with our meals.
The View at the Picton Golf & Country Club (good), on Hwy 49 just north of Picton
- breakfast in 2010 & lunch in 2009 - during the summers
  • Has the best view in the County that I've found.
  • Good, basic food at very reasonable prices.
The Tall Poppy Cafe (quite good), on Main St. in Bloomfield
- coffee & snack in summer 2010
  • Update for January 2011: I think it only opened in 2010, and it's already up for sale, as the owners are going back to Australia!!! They also have an organic farm (where they get some of their ingredients from) up for sale to go with the cafe, and their house on the farm.
  • Only tried a latte & a dessert thingy, but these were good. And the menu on the chalkboard looks good - would like to try for lunch.
  • It's got a liquor license, & apparently live music according to their website.
The Waring House - The Barley Room (adequate), on Hwy 33 south of Picton at CR 1
- in Dec. 2006 Miky & I met here for the first time ever (for lunch), and we go back a couple of times a year (for lunch or dinner), which is a lot for us since we eat out less than once a month
  • Good pub food. Also has Amelia's Garden for fine dining.
  • Often has live music in the evenings, at least in the summer.
The Industrial Perk Cafe (good) - no website, on McSteven Dr. just north of Picton
- lunch in 2010 & in 2009(?)
  • Interesting cafe food, moderately priced (even slightly pricey for a quick bite).
  • Might only be open during the day on weekdays - to cater to nearby businesses, I'm guessing.
  • Out of the way, so not easy to find: 11 McSteven Dr. between Johnson St. & McFarland Dr. - near the hospital (613) 471-1222
Harvest Restaurant (good), on Glenora Road just east of Picton - Closed now (as of 2012)
- Sunday brunch in 2008
  • Good food. Not run-of-the-mill food.
  • Medium-priced for Sunday brunch; otherwise expensive, I believe.
Portabella (OK), on Main St.
- lunch in 2007
  • I had a souffle of some sort. It was good. Can't remember much else.
  • I believe this restaurant, like many others in the County, cater to the high-end crowd. But they all tend to charge the higher prices without providing the accompanying gourmet-ness to the food. But obviously, I need to have eaten there more than once to have such opinions.
Currah's Restaurant (don't care for it), on Main St.
- dinner in 2008; in 2007 tried lunch & then a group dinner for McFarland's volunteers
  • Food has interesting ingredients, but overall I don't think the flavours come together into something cohesive. But, I don't think they use herbs & spices either.
  • Medium-priced. Atmosphere is good.
Barley Room in Waring House
- good food & pub atmosphere
- often has live music

Gus's on Main St. in downtown area
- basic diner-type food
- probably doesn't disappoint

Schooner's Fish & Chips - on Main St. across from Metro grocery store
- good for a fish 'n chip place
Michael's on corner of Lake St. and Hwy 1 - I think
- an average diner
- probably changed hands already - and name too

JJ's Texas Grill on Loyalist Parkway on the way from Picton to Bloomfield
- enjoyed the food since this type of food is not common in The County
- was up for sale last I heard

Prince Edward Pizza (off Main St. near TD bank)
- can't beat this pizza place in the county - pricey, but good
- cash only!

Schroeder's Cafe & Bakery (& Farmer's Market?)

Stopped by somewhat accidentally at 10:30 am on a Saturday in June. At the corner of Hwy 62 and County Road 1 (also called Schoharie Road) - near Huff Estates Winery.

The fresh bread is probably the best thing about the cafe.
  • They made us a fresh batch of coffee (what I call North American coffee - on the weak side, but otherwise non-objectionable).
  • Their menu consists of home-made soups, breads, and sandwiches.
  • There's a choice of about 5 flavourful soups (crockpots on the counter right in the cafe keeping them warm), served with home-made bread lathered generously with butter (or some spread anyway). The soups seem a better bet than the chili.
  • Or you can get one of a few delicious homey sandwiches.
  • $5 for soup & bread; $10 for soup & sandwich
The shop sells breads, pies/muffins/tarts, meats. And a great variety of pickles in jars - Mike really liked their sweet pickle served with the sandwich.

They apparently carry gluten-free and organic stuff, but you probably have to request these specially - they are not the default.

Lake on the Mountain

PROVINCIAL PARK:
  • View of Lake Ontario 200 ft below on one side, and Lake on the Mountain on the other side, with road in between.
  • Parking lot next to Lake Ontario, and a few trees next to the other lake, as well as a few picnic benches on both sides.
  • The rest of this Provincial Park is on the other side of Lake on the Mountain, so not accessible, it seems.
  • Swimming seems possible in Lake on the Mountain, though not common.
  • About 10 minutes drive from Picton, heading northeast on Loyalist Parkway.

RESTAURANT:
  • A part of Lake on the Mountain Resort, which also offers a few cottages for rent.
  • Has a patio with a nice view & breeze.
  • They use interesting ingredients, and food is enjoyable.
  • Beer brewed on the premises was available.
  • Main course at lunch around $10 & at dinner around $20.
Their Website: Lake on the Mountain Resort

The Acoustic Grill

  • Last time or two I tried it (in 2009), food was just OK. Their menu had changed, I think.
  • Before that, I had found it to be "an interesting little spot with non-boring food"
  • Live music some days of the week.
  • Small: about 10 tables and a bar.
  • In Picton, off Main Street, behind The Bean Counter cafe.
Their Website: The Acoustic Grill
Who's Playing When: Scheduled Musicians
What Food & Drink You Can Get: Online Menu (link currently not working - Sept. 3, 2010)

Point Petre

  • A wildlife area in the south part of the county, not well-marked at all, like most such areas around here.
  • Has places to go swimming in Lake Ontario, or walk through wooded areas.
  • Very few people around.
  • Windy area, so lots of waves in the water. Also the reason why areas around here are being targeted for commercial wind turbine power generation.
  • One of many bird-watching areas in the county.

Mustang Drive-in Theatre

  • Choose from two screens, each showing a different bunch of movies every night.
  • The owner of the drive-in writes a movie review column in a local newspaper.
  • On County Road 1, near CR 2, about 15 minutes drive west of Picton.
